Special Forces: A Young Man's Life

The 1970s and 1980s were very interesting time periods for the United States. The United States was experiencing a time period like they had never before. Much of this was based off of the previous decades that were a heavy influence over this time period. This era of the 1970s and early 1980s seems like a very intriguing time. You can see this by many examples that are available today like in movies and other sources. This time was filled with civil rights movements, social change, governmental controversy and many other things going on during this time. Young people had many new opportunities presented to them at this point in time. There were many different things going on such as drugs as and other kinds of trends that people could get caught up that would deter their efforts to becoming successful in the life that they were trying to build for themselves, as the war on drugs was raging at this time (Decades of Drug use). Robert Jones, a young man from Ayer Massachusetts came out of high school during this era. Not knowing what he wanted to do and no having the grades for college he enrolled in the army. Rob told me that he didn’t expect his decision of joining the army to have such an impact on his life as it did. As he continued to progress in the army he managed to become part of Special Forces.

Army Special Forces is such an elite group, it made up of highly qualified soldiers. Jones explained the expectations for this and how they were hard, “Of the 144 selected that were in my class in Special Forces, only 4 actually made it.”(2011) In Special Forces he took part in many high risk tactical missions. I asked Rob how he felt during some of these missions and whether or not he was scared? He responded “You don’t have time to be afraid in those situations, your adrenaline better be pumping or its not going turn out good.” (2011) He said this in a laughing manner which is quite interesting because you usually expect military people to hold back when talking about stuff like that or they are rather conservative about it.

  1. Hi Brian,

Good embedded photo, but it needs a caption.

Title is a little "blah." You can do better!

Hyperlink is ok, but it just links to the overall army site, rather than to the Special Forces. I suggest changing it to something more specific.

Your Gallup.com source is a good one, but it has an AUTHOR, so you need to cite it correctly using her name (both in the Works Cited list and in the paper itself.)

Your interview quotes are good, but there is confusion in the in-text citation. You are including the date (2011), but that is for APA style. But the name of your bibliography is "Works Cited," which is MLA style. So pick a style and be consistent in all parts of the paper.

Right now, the time period seems too broad. You need to be much more specific when referring to your subject--give the YEAR he graduated high school and the year he entered the Special Forces.
